Michoacan Activities
Ecotourism
The whole Michoacan state is a visual paradise, full of green areas and water, which make it an ideal place to go camping, taking strolls, riding horses or taking a ride on bicycle, practicing hiking, mount climbing and several different outdoor activities. Rich forests, amazing mount peaks and beautiful lakes turn the place into a real menu for the practice of all type of activities.
You can tour the green area, which possesses a vast abundance on vegetation and wild animal species, as a frame to practice camping, and to share family moments, or appreciating the sky full of bright stars along with your couple. Some of its main ecologic reserves are: National Parks of Eduardo Ruiz and Pico de Tancitaro, nearby Uruapan, the Lake Park Camecuaro, outside of Tangancuicaro, towards Morelia orient the National Parks of Jose Maria Morelos, Garnica Hill, and Los Azufres, right on border with the Mexico's State there is the Bosencheve National Park. Is impossible to forget the Chincua Sierra and the Rosario, sanctuary of the Monarch Butterfly, where this protected specie, which arrives during month of November to make distinction of the state, bringing an outstanding show for all the visitors.
If by any reason Michoacan doesn't outstand by the fishing sport, you can occasionally find aquatic activities around its many dams and lakes, but most of all camping since its waters are surrounded by rich forests. The Dams that the state offers are: Infiernillo, Zicuiran, Cointzio, Del Bosque, Mata de Pinos, Sabaneta y Pucuato (these last three at a very short distance), El Fresno y Tepuxtepec. From south to north, its lakes are Zirahuen, Patzcuaro y Cuitzeo, famous in the whole country.
The Paricutin deserves a special distinction, where different types of tours are performed, from trekking, to horse riding or riding bicycle as well. Installed near Angahuan, this is the youngest volcano on the continent and the only one that the human being has witnessed been born the day of its eruption, on February 20th of 1943. The visitor can transport and literally step over the ground of lava that buried San Juan Parangaricutiro, which tower, wall and altar of its church was the only thing that refused to disappear.
Horse Riding
In Morelia the states capitol, and Patzcuaro surroundings, horse riding has been a traditional activity that fascinates the skillful visitor to tour the around the beautiful landscapes among forests and waterfalls, make an intimate touch with nature, and being part of an adventure simply, unforgettable.
Starting off from Morelia you can enjoy from horse rides through adjacent forests, or nearby waterfall areas. There are tours to the Cointzio Dam, Zirahuen Lake and Santa Clara del Cobre; from the waterfalls of Ichaqueo to Umecaro, or up to Patzcuaro and Angahuan.
You can start off from Patzcuaro, riding your horse, to several villages adjacent to the lake, surrounded by soft hills cover on grass, and enjoying at the same time from a volcanic landscape. Some of these villages’ names are Erangoricuaro, Ihuatzio y Napizaro.
You can also ride from Patzcuaro to Uruapan, 60km ahead; there you can tour around the Barranca Cupatitzio National Park, and appreciate the river that origins the Tzaracuara Waterfall, of 60 meters, If you prefer it, it is possible while riding your horse to observe an exotic landscape created by the Paricutin volcano, that buried San Juan Parangaricutiro in 1943, or either was climb its 2,808 meters.
In the different service sites or clubs, you can find professional advice, the most trained horses and choices to camp, taking lessons on horse riding, or inform yourself about the most professional events, such as “Endurance” which is a long race through rough terrains and extreme climates that is turning into a tradition and another tourist attraction as well. Mountain Biking

Due to Michoacan is part of the Transversal Volcano Axle and from the Sierra Madre occidental, mountain enthusiast can try their skills at the Tancitaro Peak and the Paricutin Volcano, in Uruapan; Condembaro, at the Huacana; La Aguja, on Tumbiscatio; Dolores, in Huetamo; San Andres, at the hidalgo municipal; and Patamban in Zamora.
The rappel enthusiasts can practice climbing on the Tzaracuara canyon, southern Patzcuaro, where some services for the visitor have being integrated, such as barbeque grills, bathrooms and roofs for rain seasons. 18 km ahead there is the Cupatitzio Cliffs, or the archaeological zones of Tingambato, that is also a place visited by extreme sport figures.
A few adventures in the world can be as spectacular and exciting as the free jump and the paragliding, activities which from the lessons to the take off make your heart beat from vertigo and adrenaline rush. Other than jumping from a plane or a building, the michoacan sierra offers high and beautiful peaks for those who want to compete with hawks and eagles cutting the air with the loud scream that fades with the fall. The adventurers can practice in the Chincua Sierra, in the Ocampo municipalities; Angangueo and Senguio; el Quinceo, in Morelia; the Vantage Point of Mil Cumbres and the La Escalera, in the village of Caracol, Hidalgo municipal; de Del Estribo Hill, in Patzcuaro; at the coast, on the Vantage Points of Brisas and San Juan de Alima.
Golf
There are four Golf courses around the whole area, enough to make Michoacan venue of important Golf tournaments, such as the Corona Championship, which courses have been scenario for golf figures such as the Mexican famous golfer Lorena Ochoa.
Morelia, the most important city on the state, privileged by an altitude of 2,000 meters over the ocean level, and a moderate weather almost all year long, offers the Country Club, with 9 wholes, and only 3 km, the most attractive one from the state, the Tres Marias Residencial Golf Club, with 27 wholes.
At the Km 129 of the Toluca-Morelia highway, nearby Contepec can be enjoyed from the Hacienda Cantalagua Hotel & Country Club, that offers a golf course of 18 wholes and at Zacapu there is the Rocas Country Valley, of 9 wholes the smallest golf course of the state but not the less fun one.
